How to get the little things done when the big things are overwhelming

If you’re in a major that has too much volume to ever consider “finished,” then what are you supposed to do about getting the little assignments done for the easier classes?  We always hear that we should tackle our most important tasks first and focus on them, but in some majors, those important classes could easily eat up all of our waking hours.   We have to know when to stop and do all the little things that also have to be done.

This is where time blocking can really help and even show you some time slots you might have been wasting in the past. Have a look at your class schedule as well as other commitments you have at various times during the week and block out time slots of the big things – then find some previously wasted slots for those little things.

Suppose you have one class from 9-10:30 am and the next one doesn’t start until 11:00. I can see myself thinking that’s a great time to grab a soda, check Facebook, and just generally goof off a little. After all, I deserve a break, right? What if instead you claim that block of time to go to a good spot somewhere near that 11:00 class and knock out some little task you have to do? Read your health chapter. Prepare for psych lab. Something you can check off the list and have done.

Look at your schedule and block out the premium times to do the big things, of course. But remember to grab some of the previously wasted blocks for those little things, to make sure they get done!
